About Prairie Dog Brewing

Located at 105D 58 Ave SE Calgary, Our 200-seat brewpub is fun and bohemian with a family-friendly, come-as-you-are attitude in a conversation-friendly atmosphere, and boasts open-air views into our microbrewery and large, open kitchen pass. Our food is made from scratch with Alberta ingredients, and focus on Texas-style barbecue, with meats and vegetables smoked and slow roasted in Clifford, our big red barbecue pit from Mesquite, Texas (the biggest BBQ pit of its kind in Canada). Check out our menu here.

We are training our staff to become Cicerone Beer Servers, and we will focus on keeping a large variety of our own beers on tap as well as a few other great options, beer and non-beer. Come on out!

Super B (Formerly Hopped Wheat)   (3.55/5)

This American-style wheat beer pours golden and hazy with a white, foamy head, and features prominent citrus, stone fruit, and bread aroma. The beer has a light, refreshing body with moderate carbonation and a dry but soft bread-flavoured finish and mild grainy aftertaste. An easy drinker that won’t fatigue the palate.

Style: Wheat Beer - American Pale Wheat

ABV: 4.9%    IBU: 20

Tail Twitcher   (3.69/5)

Clear, amber and dry, this modern example of an American-style IPA bursts with tangerine, lemon and a resinous grapefruit character overlaid upon a tasty base of Alberta malts. Amarillo, Lemondrop and Mosaic hops are generously added late in the boil and throughout several massive dry-hop steps. In spite of the intense hop character, bitterness is balanced to allow the underlying malt flavour to shine through in this dry-finishing beer.

Style: IPA - American

ABV: 6.7%    IBU: 74

Ginger Lime Gose   (3.64/5)

A fun take on the Gose style, which is a light, slightly tart and fruity German wheat ale style that incorporates coriander spices. Our version features subtle flavours and aromas of freshly zested limes, diced ginger, and coriander, with subtle banana from the yeast used to ferment the beer. Wheat and barley flavours mingle to remind the drinker of the fact that it is a beer.

Style: Sour - Gose - Fruited

ABV: 5.1%    IBU: 13

Smoke On the Lauter   (3.58/5)

Our Smoke on the Lauter is a medium-bodied oat pale ale with restrained American hops and smokey aromas and flavour over a pleasant base beer with a soft, pleasant mouthfeel. The smoke in this beer dominates but is not harsh or acrid, and features a toasty, woody character reminiscent of campfire, which interplays wonderfully with the malts and nutty oat flavours.

Style: Pale Ale - American

ABV: 5.2%    IBU: 30

Coconut Brown Ale   (3.64/5)

This Prairie Dog beer overlays sweet, freshly toasted coconut on a nutty brown base beer, with flavours of milk chocolate, caramel and toast, on a mildly bitter backbone with a dry finish

Style: Brown Ale - English

ABV: 5.5%    IBU: 32

IPA   (3.7/5)

An edgy, modern example of the American IPA category that bursts with lemon, orange and tangerine fruit character. A generous blend of Amarillo, Lemondrop and Mosaic hops are added at the end of boil and through multiple dry-hop steps. In spite of the great hop character, bitterness is balanced to allow the underlying malt flavour to shine through in this dry-finishing beer.

Style: IPA - American

ABV: 6.7%    IBU: 74

Oatmeal Stout   (3.64/5)

A rich, dark stout with a thick, creamy head and full mouthfeel, having notes of coffee, caramel, and dark chocolate with background smoke character from our in-house-smoked flaked oats.

Style: Stout - Oatmeal

ABV: 5.5%    IBU: 35

Coffee Kolsch   (3.79/5)

Our Little Bear Kölsch recipe infused with a custom blend of cold-brew coffee by Typeface Coffee Roasters, which brings milk chocolate, toffee and caramel notes to the beer – no harsh coffee bitterness at all. Tastes like a Coffee Crisp bar in a glass.

Style: Kölsch

ABV: 4.3%    IBU: 23

Little Bear   (3.51/5)

Flavourful but easy drinking, our Kölsch-style ale is clean and crisp with a slightly sweet grainy flavour and a dry finish. Based on the pilsner style, but fermented with ale yeast and lagered for several weeks, this beer has a pleasant, soft and surprisingly refreshing flavour profile that makes it stand tall beside its lager brethren.

Style: Kölsch

ABV: 4.4%    IBU: 23

Smoked Peppa   (3.4/5)

This tasty English-style pale ale is a Goldilocks beer — not too spicy and not too smoky, just right. It starts with a blend of our in-house-smoked oats and Alberta malts, and is “dry-hopped” in fermenter with a mix of smoked peppers for a complex and refreshing finish, with crackery malt underpinnings and just the right level of bitterness for balance and a pleasant warming sensation from the hot-peppers.

Style: Pale Ale - English

ABV: 5.5%    IBU: 30

Kettle Sour #1   (3.58/5)

A modern take on German Berliner-weisse with a tart acidity and surprising level of flavour and body for such a low alcohol beer, with plenty of malty, husky grain flavour and a pale yellow colour with some haze.

Style: Sour - Berliner Weisse

ABV: 3%    IBU: 7

Porter   (3.5/5)

Our porter has been a long-standing favourite as a homebrew recipe, which we adapted to our commercial brewing system with great results. The beer features loads of dark, complex malts with notes of toasted caramel, coffee and chocolate overlaid by a pleasant spicy/herbal hop character. The beer has a full body but finishes fairly dry, making it easy to have more than one.

Style: Porter - American

ABV: 5.9%    IBU: 32

Gopher Broke Mango IPA   (3.66/5)

We really did go all out for this mango and hop-infused double IPA! Gopher Broke is a higher-alcohol hop and fruit bomb with real mango and an assertive bitterness with grassy undertones from massive hop additions, all backed by the flavour of Alberta malt. Though it tips the scale north of 8% ABV, the alcohol in this beer hides silently in the background, making it a sneaky one, indeed. This beer pours hazy due to our massive full-fruit mango addition.

Style: IPA - Imperial / Double

ABV: 8.5%    IBU: 75

Gunnison’s Red   (3.69/5)

Named after the boisterous Gunnison’s Prairie Dog of the four-corners region, our red ale takes cues from the class Irish Red style, employing a hint of roasted barley for colour and taste atop a base of sweeter caramel malts with a deliberate underlying bitterness that keeps the beer palatable and adds a pleasant aftertaste, but includes a late dose of Chinook hops for a spicier, American-style finish. Our house yeast keeps the beer fairly dry with a malty backbone, making it easy to have another.

Style: Red Ale - American Amber / Red

ABV: 5.5%    IBU: 24

Strait-Lace Saison   (3.47/5)

Our Strait-lace Saison is extremely refreshing, effervescent and straw-coloured with moderate haze. Fermented with Belgian yeast, this ale features complex pepper and spicy character, which we overlay on a bready Canadian barley/wheat malt base that finishes with subtle notes of biscuit and cracker, which are contributed by specialty malts from Red Shed Malting (Penhold, AB).

Style: Farmhouse Ale - Saison

ABV: 5.3%    IBU: 9

Philpott's Honey Chamomile Wheat   (3.8/5)

Silver-medal winner at the 2019 Canadian International Beer Awards for Best Friday Cask!
Hazy, effervescent, full-flavoured, floral and complex. We designed this recipe from the ground up and used a generous addition of chamomile flowers and fresh Alberta Philpott honey to give the beer a unique and tasty flavour profile. Chamomile dominates with a soft honey aroma and a satisfying bready, cracker-like finish from Alberta malts. We used East Kent Golding hops for bittering and at whirlpool to reinforce the floral aroma. Everything comes together to make this a super easy-drinking, delicious summer beer.

Style: Wheat Beer - Other

ABV: 5.6%    IBU: 17

Cali Common   (3.42/5)

We brewed this lager/ale hybrid as an homage to our close attachment with California, where most of Prairie Dog's founders lived immediately prior to launching our business. This style resemble American Amber (Red) ale, but it uses a unique strain of lager yeast, which was primarily used in "Steam beers" during the early 20th century in San Francisco before dying out and being resurrected by Anchor brewing (San Francisco) during the late 70's. Our version is amber with a foamy head with a firm, old-school West coast bittering/flavour hop to balance out the toasty, malty base and roasty undertones.

Style: California Common

ABV: 5.4%    IBU: 38

Vanilla-Oaked Porter   (3.84/5)

Our first public release of a Prairie dog barrel-aged beer. Starting as our house Porter, we aged the beer for several months in a french oak barrel that had previously been used to age red wine (style unknown). During its life in the barrel, the beer picked up loads of vanilla and stone fruit character (cherry), and underwent a secondary fermentation with wine yeast, drying it out significantly. To sweeten the beer backup, we blended it with more of the straight porter and added a hint of natural vanilla to round out the edges.

Style: Porter - Other

ABV: 6.7%    IBU: 32

Kettle Sour Gone Wild!   (3.8/5)

When we brewed the first batch of our kettle sour, which turned out to be wildly popular, we squirrelled away 400-litres of the beer in oak red-wine barrels and began to age it. After several months, we transferred the beer to a second barrel and inoculated it with brettanomyces yeast, a form of “wild” yeast that adds loads of complex phenols and some fruity notes to this highly spirited and white-wine-like beer, which still clocks in at under 3.5% ABV.

Style: Sour - Other

ABV: 3.3%    IBU: 7

Pucker Up Chuck   (3.71/5)

Dark chocolate meets tart red wine and wood character in this barrel-aged, sour stout. Sweetness backs up the bold, fruity character, with undertones of vanilla and toffee. Soured with wild bacteria while aging three months in a 3rd-use bourbon barrel. No wine or wine-barrel-aging was involved, the wine character is entirely the result of the beer, wood, and microbiology involved.

Style: Dark Ale

ABV: 5.5%    IBU: 35

Maple Bacon Marzen   (3.03/5)

Style: Smoked Beer

ABV: 6.1%    IBU: 19

Coco Smoke   (3.6/5)

Proving that beer need not be dark to feature delicious roasty, chocolate character, this golden-coloured ale is layered with complexity. This small-batch started with our popular Smoked Peppa Pale Ale base, which we then infused with Ecuadorian Arriba Nacional cacao beans to add rich dark chocolate flavours and aromas. The slightly warming, peppery base beer has subtle smokey notes that blissfully interplay with the cacao flavours.

Style: Pale Ale - American

ABV: 5.5%    IBU: 30

Link Back: Coco Smoke - Brewed In Calgary AB

Cinco De Mayo   (3.55/5)

This “Taco in a Glass” beer was inspired by the savoury flavours of Mexican food. Based roughly on the brown ale style, this beer has about 15% of its grist replaced with toasted flaked corn. Liberal additions of cumin, black pepper and smoked paprika give the beer flavours reminiscent of taco seasoning, and time spent with heavy-toast oak lends underlying complexity to this unique creation.

Cumin and toasted corn, biscuit malt character and smoked paprika are quite evident. Roast character from the heavy toast oak, and a slightly saline finish. Some umami flavour.

Style: Spiced / Herbed Beer

ABV: 5.4%    IBU: 14

Mango Habanero Double IPA   (3.7/5)

Style: IPA - American

ABV: 8.6%    IBU: 0
