About Prairie Dog Brewing

Located at 105D 58 Ave SE Calgary, Our 200-seat brewpub is fun and bohemian with a family-friendly, come-as-you-are attitude in a conversation-friendly atmosphere, and boasts open-air views into our microbrewery and large, open kitchen pass. Our food is made from scratch with Alberta ingredients, and focus on Texas-style barbecue, with meats and vegetables smoked and slow roasted in Clifford, our big red barbecue pit from Mesquite, Texas (the biggest BBQ pit of its kind in Canada). Check out our menu here.

We are training our staff to become Cicerone Beer Servers, and we will focus on keeping a large variety of our own beers on tap as well as a few other great options, beer and non-beer. Come on out!

Little Bear   (3.58/5)

Flavourful but easy drinking, our Kölsch-style ale is clean and crisp with a slightly sweet grainy flavour and a dry finish. Based on the pilsner style, but fermented with ale yeast and lagered for several weeks, this beer has a pleasant, soft and surprisingly refreshing flavour profile that makes it stand tall beside its lager brethren.

Crispy Gurl   (3.73/5)

For this year’s International Women’s Day brew, we are collaborating with XHale Brew Co to create our own take on a very new style, the “Cold IPA”, which is sweeping across the USA but has yet to make its mark on Alberta. This mixed style combines aspects of both a European Lager and a West Coast IPA to create a very unique brew that is light in colour, crisp in finish, and heavy on hops. What better way to showcase this year’s Pink Boots hop blend? Our annual Pink Boots Brew is used to re-establish the conversation around women empowerment and inclusion in the brewing industry and we’ve teamed up with XHale Brew Co to help expand our reach with this important message.

Style: IPA - Cold

ABV: 6.8%    IBU: 50

Jitter Bear   (3.76/5)

The return of a fan-favourite! We’ve infused our Little Bear with Motherlode Coffee (Calgary, AB) using their No Closets Pride Blend! This Coffee Crisp candy bar in a glass brings in milk chocolate, toffee, honey and caramel notes with no harsh coffee bitterness.

Gunnison’s Red   (3.68/5)

ABV: 5.5%    IBU: 24

Jumpingpound   (3.64/5)

A hazy, tart and crackery Kettle Sour with a hint of lemon. Try this traditional sour on its own or with our house made fruit syrups! A modern take on German Berliner-weisse with a tart acidity and surprising level of flavour and body for such a low alcohol beer, with plenty of malty, husky grain flavour and a pale yellow colour with some haze. Originally called Kettle Sour #2, Jumpingpound is the basis for nearly all of our Barrel-Aged Sour and Barrel-Aged Fruited Sour beers. We are bringing this classic back in its unadulterated form with a fancy new name, emphasizing the importance of the connection to nature and the versatility of this product that has been around all along, but quietly in the background.

Style: Sour - Berliner Weisse

ABV: 3.3%    IBU: 7

Point of Order   (3.59/5)

A classic, no-frills example of an American Porter. No cacao nibs, no lactose, no fruits, just a delicious classic Porter that wants to be a Porter. Rich, complex dark malt character with notes of toasted caramel, coffee and chocolate overlaid by a pleasant floral and citrus hop character.

You're Beautiful   (3.66/5)

This fruited kettle sour was first created last summer to celebrate Pride Week and due to extremely popular demand, it has returned in even more glorious fashion! We took our Jumpingpound Kettle Sour and refermented it over 90 pounds of blueberry puree before adding a hint of lemon zest and vanilla to create an extremely approachable sour beer. Bursting with fruity citrus and berry notes paired with a delicately tart and full mouthfeel, this beer is sure to surprise many and blow away preconceived notions towards sour beers.

Style: Sour - Fruited

ABV: 3.3%    IBU: 7

Prairie Lands Lager   (3.65/5)

This rich and malty lager highlights some of the fantastic malt grown and produced on our very own prairie lands. Expect a strong malty flavour with notes of chocolate, caramel, cracker and biscuit, with a sweeter profile based on the lager yeast.

Radler   (3.74/5)

What was originally a cask produced for Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival 2019, we have now scaled up this beer to serve in our taproom for the Summer months. A citrus-forward hazy wheat beer blended with orange and cranberry juices.

Style: Fruit Beer

ABV: 4%    IBU: 20

Sour Expedition #1: Dry-Hopped Jumpingpound   (3.68/5)

The first beer in our Sour Expedition highlights unique and experimental hop varieties to create a delicious sensory experience that is more than the sum of its parts. From the base Jumpingpound sour with its crackery and lemony notes with signature tartness we elevated the journey by dry-hopping with HBC 472, Cryo Mosaic, and African Queen. We chose such expressive hops to match the layered sourness that comes from modern kettle souring techniques - balancing the sour notes with the bitter notes without overpowering either. The result is a sessionable, pleasant dry-hopped sour that can be enjoyed anywhere.

Style: Sour - Berliner Weisse

ABV: 3.3%    IBU: 7

Experimental IPA   (3.52/5)

This beer uses the same malt bill as our Flagship Tail Twitcher but we switched the hopping regiment by adding more hops in the first dry hop and doing a second dry hop when the beer was cold (the last step before carbonation. We also switched to an American ale yeast in place of the English ale yeast we have used in our Tail Twitchers since day one.

Style: IPA - American

ABV: 7%    IBU: 75

Gopher Lite   (3.57/5)

A bold expression of subtle changes - this low-alcohol, low-calorie, low-carbohydrate lager style beer is dry-hopped for beautiful hop aroma and flavour without the crazy buzz.
Per 150mL: 43 cal 2.7 g carbs Per 250mL: 72 cal 4.5 g carbs Per 473mL: 135 cal 8.5 g carbs

Style: Lager - American Light

Zinful California Zinfandel Barrel-Aged Baltic Porter   (3.44/5)

We took Desperate Times, our unique take on a Baltic Porter and aged it in a single barrel that once held California Zinfandel (2018 vintage), bringing mellow dark fruit, vanilla, and toast undertones to an already rich and delicious porter. Lagered and barrel-aged, this beer is smooth and crisp, yet full bodied and deceptively easy drinking for its alcohol content. At over 10%, this beer brings a fair amount of alcoholic heat that is beautifully balanced and mellowed from its extended barrel-aging time of 1 year. The resulting flavours resemble that of a glass of sherry or port with plenty of oak, vanilla, toast, and dark fruit notes.

Style: Porter - Imperial / Double Baltic

ABV: 10.3%    IBU: 36

Firebrand Tennessee Whiskey Barrel-Aged Baltic Porter   (3.83/5)

We took Desperate Times, our unique take on a Baltic Porter, the 100th batch of beer brewed at Prairie Dog Brewing and aged it for 5 months in Tennessee Whiskey barrels, bringing bold yet smooth whiskey characteristics to an already rich and delicious beer. The malty sweet chocolate and light roastiness serve to introduce the warming backbone of its 10.3% ABV. Lagered and barrel-aged, this beer is smooth and crisp, yet full bodied and deceptively easy drinking for its alcohol content.

Style: Porter - Imperial / Double Baltic

ABV: 10.3%    IBU: 36

S.T.E.V.E.   (4.21/5)

A blend of 15-month bourbon barrel-aged and 3-month stainless-aged imperial stouts, further bottle-aged for 2.5 years. A deceptively smooth, full-bodied drinking experience without the sharpness of younger examples. Named for the atmospheric phenomenon that was originally coined in Alberta; Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement (S.T.E.V.E. for short), which appears as a ribbon of light across the sky. From its Aurora-watching inspiration, this barrel-aged imperial stout’s name represents a long process of studying and the amazing discoveries happening right here in Alberta in the sky and in brewery barrels. This big beautiful beer showcases what some patience and childlike wonder will do.

Style: Stout - Imperial / Double

ABV: 10.4%    IBU: 77

Cloud Alby   (Unrated)

This Hazy IPA is an ultra-creamy cloud of dry-hopped deliciousness with notes of tangerine, peach, raspberry and passionfruit, with a resin finish. A super approachable Hazy IPA using wheat malt and oat malt to increase protein haze and give a creamy, fluffy mouthfeel without the use of milk sugar. Dry-hopped with a combination of Mosaic, Idaho Gem, and HBC 630 - an experimental hop that enhances creaminess with a low caramel note.

Style: IPA - New England / Hazy

ABV: 6.6%    IBU: 17

Link Back: Cloud Alby - Brewed In Calgary AB

Weathervane Peaches   (Unrated)

A mixed fermentation sour that was barrel-aged for nearly three years enriched by the influence of brettanomyces yeast and finished with an infusion of luscious peaches.

Style: Sour - Fruited

ABV: 3.7%    IBU: 5
